Our children are frequently exposed to violence in today’s world. How do we protect, nurture and educate children when they are being bombarded with these scenes? What makes one child exposed to violence respond with violent acts yet leaves another less damaged? This presentation does not focus on violence but instead on health and prevention. In the words of Dr. Bruce Perry, 'health promotion is violence prevention'. Through his work with traumatized children, Dr. Perry has identified six core strengths that promote health and decrease risk for social-emotional, behavioral and cognitive problems.Attendees will learn the six core strengths, the signs of a child struggling with a core strength and strategies to develop and enhance the core strengths. They will also learn how to implement a program at their school that will provide parents with strategies to develop the core strengths in their child.
